Lisa Henderson, Ph.D., professor and past Chair of the Department of Communication, is a Spring 2017 Visiting Scholar with the Scholars Program for Culture and Communication at the Annenberg School at the University of Pennsylvania. Henderson studies cultural production, sexual representation, feminist media, class discourse, and ethnographic method. Comm alumna Kyung-wha Kang, ’81 MA, ’84 PhD, is a South Korean diplomat, serving as special advisor on policy to United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who took office Jan. 1. Kang headed Guterres’ transition team since his election in October. She previously served as assistant secretary-general for humanitarian affairs since 2013 and was deputy high commissioner for human rights from 2007 to 2013.

Claire Wardle, Ph.D., research director at the Tow Center, recently visited the Communication Department and gave a talk at the Integrative Learning Center 3rd floor Hub, about the use of social media in broadcasting the refugee crisis. The Tow Center for Digital Journalism is based at Columbia University. Wardle’s knowledge of the refugee crisis comes from her work for United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Geneva as a Senior Social Media Officer.

Professor Donal Carbaugh, Ph.D., was honored along with seven other UMass faculty members at the 12th annual Faculty Convocation on September 30, 2016 in Bowker Auditorium. The eight nationally acclaimed faculty members were presented with the 2016 Award for Outstanding Accomplishments in Research and Creative Activity.
