Chancellor Subbaswamy’s Remarks
Friday, May 8, 2015
The Mullins Center, University of Massachusetts Amherst
Good morning and congratulations graduates!
You cannot say that often enough!
I would like to take a moment and welcome all your families and friends who have joined us here today on this happy occasion. On behalf of the university community, I want to thank them for supporting you as you pursued your academic aspirations. This day belongs to all of you.
I also want to acknowledge the critical role of your faculty advisors. Their mentoring and encouragement gave you the inspiration and tenacity you needed to continue through to completion of your degree. This morning, your advisors also share in the excitement of your success.
It’s a wonderful sight to look out at all of you.
You come from over 60 countries, representing every corner of the globe. And with a range of ages from 22 to 69, you cover the gamut of life experiences as well.
Your varying perspectives and backgrounds have enriched the campus community – and informed your intellectual exploration. Each one of you has taken your chosen academic discipline and explored it through your own unique lens – a lens that was shaped over the years by your own individual experiences.
It is through your personal interpretations, informed by this lens, that you have uniquely contributed to your academic discipline.
This morning, in addition to acknowledging your individual contributions, we also want to celebrate your collective accomplishments as the Graduate School Class of 2015. Together, you share an understanding amongst yourselves of the commitment and self-discipline that was required to successfully bring you here today. And while you each pursued your own academic focus, you all have a common appreciation for the excitement that comes from following one’s own intellectual interest.
This complement between individual intellectual exploration and the mutual appreciation shared among the academic community is a rewarding experience, and it gives me great pleasure to know you are a part of it.
To the Graduate School Class of 2015, on behalf of the entire campus community, I congratulate you on the completion of this significant milestone, I wish you all the best, and I look forward to following your future achievements.
