Jamie Lavin Chosen Student Speaker
for the Class of 2004

Jamie LavinJamie Lavin, of Weymouth Mass., who is pursuing a an undergraduate degree in economics and business, has been selected to be the student speaker at the 134th Commencement of the University of Massachusetts Amherst on Sunday, May 23 at 10 a.m. in Warren P. McGuirk Alumni Stadium.

Lavin is a resident assistant in Johnson residence hall and oversees two other residence halls, Thatcher and Lewis. She is the public relations chair of the newly founded Residential Leadership Association, and a member of the National Residence Hall Honorary. She has also been the UMass delegate to the National Association of Colleges and University Residence Halls conferences in 2002 and 2003.

Lavin, who hopes to enter a career in business, says being the student speaker at Commencement fulfills one of the goals she set for her undergraduate years. “Four years ago, the one thing I wanted was for people to know who I was,” Lavin says. “Now that’s happening.” She says gaining recognition from her fellow students and from the University community will serve as a motivational factor as she crafts her professional career.

After graduation, Lavin says she intends to travel to Europe, and to spend time in Scotland, Australia, and New Zealand. After traveling, she wants to then attend graduate school to earn a master of business administration degree.

Lavin is the daughter of Kathy and Greg Lavin, of Weymouth, Mass.

Lavin was chosen to be the student speaker by a committee of faculty and students.
