Seven honorary degrees to be awarded

Undergraduate Commencement speaker Billie Jean King and six others, including four alumni, will receive honorary degrees during graduation ceremonies May 20 and May 21.

The degree recipients are:

Davidow Jeffrey A. Davidow, alumnus and U.S. ambassador to Mexico; doctor of laws.
Dobelle Evan S. Dobelle, alumnus and president of Trinity College (Hartford, CT); doctor of public service;
Isenberg Eugene M. Isenberg, alumnus and chairman and chief executive officer of Nabors Industries Inc. in Houston; doctor of public service;
Kathrada Ahmed M. Kathrada, South African freedom-fighter and former member of the South African parliament; doctor of laws;
King Billie Jean King, Tennis star, equal rights activist; doctor of humane letters;
Penniman Bruce M. Penniman, alumnus and 1999 Massachusetts Teacher of the Year; doctor of humane letters;
Smith Edgar E. Smith, former vice president for Academic Affairs for the University system; doctor of science.

Dobelle, Kathrada, and Penniman will receive their honorary degrees during the graduate Commencement on May 20. Honorary degrees will be conferred on King, Smith, Isenberg, and Davidow during undergraduate ceremonies on May 21.
