This course is an introduction to the indigenous languages of Mexico and Guatemala. We will study the characteristics of the languages in their respective social and political contexts from linguistic and anthropological perspectives. The questions to be addressed include: Who are the speakers of indigenous languages? What makes a language endangered? How do native speakers value their own languages and how does this differ from the perspectives of non-indigenous peoples? Finally, what role do native speakers play in language revitalization?
