391A Honors Seminar 2: Frida & Diego: Art & Love in Revolutionary Mexico

Instructor:

This course will explore revolutionary art in Mexico through the lens of the
lives of its most dynamic practitioners: Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. We
will explore Mexican muralism, the Surrealists who thrived in Mexico (most
of them refugees from European fascism), the neglected contributions of
women to Mexican art, and how art and politics intersected in a time of
economic crisis and the rise of both revolutionary and fascist ideologies in
Europe.
