Initially launched in 2000 and led by the
University of Massachusetts Amherst, CITI brought together community
colleges, state colleges, and the University campuses together with
industry leaders to strengthen and modernize computer science and
information technology programs at public postsecondary institutions
across the Commonwealth. Through funding by the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education (BHE), CITI helped develop a number of
promising courses, programs, and partnerships that continue to this
day. These include the innovative “IT Across the Curriculum”
model that has been implemented in different ways at multiple campuses,
and the Boston Area Advanced Technological Education Center (BATEC)
model of a regional IT workforce development partnership.
Unfortunately, as with many other worthy initiatives, state funds for
CITI were cut during the 2001 fiscal crisis. Since that time, key
industry and education stakeholders have continued to work for the
continuation and expansion of the CITI model.
In 2004, as a result of CITI’s strong initial
outcomes, CITI received an infusion of funds from the private sector
and the BHE to continue
its work in the area of promoting information technology across the
curriculum at both the K-12 and higher education levels.
With this funding CITI will now continue in its mission to promote IT
fluency through teaching and learning activities that prepare students
to participate successfully in Massachusetts’ “knowledge economy”.
In 2004, due to limited funding, CITI will focus
on one of its four program areas – Information Technology Across the
Curriculum. Read more about CITI’s program areas,
CITI is managed by a team of faculty
and administrators led by the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
