Degrees Earned in 2016-2017 Academic Year

Graduation in May of each year is a time to celebrate the accomplishments of the students associated with CIE who completed their degrees during the academic year. This year three Doctoral students, eight Master’s students and one Education Specialist student received their degrees. These twelve students represent six different countries.

Graduate Students Awarded Summer Fellowships

The Graduate School at UMass Amherst, supports greater diversity and inclusion in non-STEM fields by offering summer fellowships for graduate students working toward their doctoral dissertation.

 

The Graduate School also offers competitive Predissertation Grants.to give early career graduate students the opportunity to evaluate the feasibility of planned dissertation research, generate pilot data, or establish the necessary networks to carry out planned dissertation research.

Joseph B. Berger Appointed Chair of Global Higher Education and Research

In October of 2015, Joseph B. Berger was appointed chair of the Global Higher Education & Research Global Challenge (GHEAR), an initiative of the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN), a global higher education and research network.

 

In May 2017 Dr. Berger chaired a two-day GHEAR workshop at UMass Amherst on Sustainable Development Goals for Higher Education.

Gallery Walk – Current Graduate Student Research

Each year the College of Education sponsors a Gallery Walk where graduate students present their current research activities through posters. Visitors walk through the hall where the posters are hung, pausing in front of those that spark their interest to ask questions and talk with the students who are there to explain their research. Among the presenters were two students in international education whose posters reported on research based on fieldwork in other countries

CIE Response to the January 2017 U.S. Executive Order on Immigration

The students, faculty, and staff at the Center for International Education (CIE) at UMass Amherst resoundingly oppose the Executive Order on Immigration that temporarily suspends travel from seven Muslim majority countries and selectively denies entry to Syrian refugees.

A New Cohort of Students Joins CIE

This September, CIE welcomed eight new students who come from Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Tibet, Zimbabwe and the U.S. The US students bring extensive work experience in Brazil, Turkmenistan, Indonesia and Bolivia. There are four Master's candidates and four Doctoral candidates. They add to the very international mix of experienced educators already at CIE.
