Stephanie Pirroni

For the past seven years, I have been working at the Foundation for the Application and the Teaching of the Sciences (FUNDAEC) in Colombia  with alternative education programs aimed at enabling  rural youth marginalized from quality and relevant educational opportunities to build the capacities needed to promote processes of autochthonous development within their communities.  Through a grant that FUNDAEC was awarded to by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, I have had the opportunity to collaborate with a network of organizations in Kenya, Uganda and Zambia implementing an education for development program called Preparation for Social Action. Here in Colombia, I have also been working on a literacy and gender project whose objective is to develop within middle-school aged children an appreciation for reading and learning, in an effort to help reduce high levels of high school desertion in rural Colombia.
