Professional Development

CIEstudents participate in a wide array of professional development activities during their degree programs. Some of these are on campus at Tuesday Dialogues or at other locations at UMass. Others involve attending national conferences, regional conferences, workshops and conferences in the region.

CIE & Open Society Foundations - 1998 to Present

Since 1998 CIE has enjoyed a long and productive relationship with the Open Society Foundations (OSF) scholarship programs.  Over the years this relationship has brought three different groups of scholars to study at CIE. Dr, Gretchen Rossman, pictured here with Larissa Chekmareva, one of the students from Kazakhstan, has acted as the liaison faculty member with OSF throughout this period.  CIE looks forward to more OSF sponsored students in the future.

CIE Well Represented at USAID Global Education Summit

CIE was represented by fourteen faculty members, graduates and current students at USAID’s Global Education Summit in Washington, D.C. on November 2-4, 2015. The event drew over 700 USAID Education Officers, partners and education leaders from Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America/Caribbean to share knowledge and experience related to USAID’s three Education Goals.

Does Watching Help? The Impact of International Monitoring

In 2015, Education for All (EFA) concluded its 25-year cycle and the Global Monitoring Report (GMR) - Education for All 2000-2015: Achievements and Challenges - was published with the final assessment of triumph and defeat in reaching the six EFA goals. Professor David Post from Pennsylvania State University was a member of the UNESCO Paris team working on the GMR.

Development Assistance for Education

Steve Anzalone (Ed.D. 1981) returned to CIE for a Tuesday Dialogue on Development Assistance for Education: TSteve Anzalonerends and Inertia. Steve is currently vice-president of the International Development Division of the Education Development Center (EDC) in Washington DC. He shared his more than 30 years of experience in the field of education development and spoke candidly about the world of donor-assisted interventions to education in developing countries. Steve presented his perspective on current trends in the field of international education development singling out three for discussion.
