Obituaries

Justin B. Stone

Justin B. Stone, 77, of the Florence section of Northampton, a retired professional technician III in Physics and Astronomy, died Feb. 25 in Baystate Medical Center in Springfield following a brief illness.

He served the University for 19 years before retiring in 1983. He also worked as a Realtor for Murphy's Realtors in Northampton and at Millitech Corp.

He held a U.S. patent for a radio-astronomy device called a "Judd Drive." He also was a master furniture maker, specializing in Queen Anne reproductions.

A graduate of Williamsburg High School, he was a long-time resident of Florence, where he was a member of the Florence Congregational Church for 50 years. He served on several boards at the church.

He was a member and past master of the Jerusalem Lodge of Masons and of the Bethlehem Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

He also was past president of the Florence Business and Civic Association and a member of the 6th Massachusetts Continentals, a Revolutionary War re-enactment society.

An avid traveler, he belonged to the Williamsburg High School travel club and was active in the alumni association at the school.

He leaves his wife of 55 years, Ellen Stone; three sons, Barry, a technical specialist in Astronomy, of Florence, the Rev. Glenn A. of Sagamore Beach, and Kirk of Vermont; a daughter, Pamela of Lynn; and other family.

Maurice V. Spear Sr.

Maurice V. Spear Sr., 92, of Amherst, a retired technical assistant in Veterinary and Animal Sciences, died Feb. 28 in Cooley Dickinson Hospital.

He served the University for 23 years and 9 months before retiring in 1973. He also had worked as a lumberman.

He was a member of the North Hadley Congregational Church and an avid fisherman.

He leaves his wife of 64 years, Barbara Spear; a son, Maurice Jr. of South Hadley; a daughter, Rosemary Spear Chamley of Arundel, Maine; and other family.
