Social Security and Medicare counseling
Do you know if you will be eligible for Social Security
income?
Alexandria Szymt, Social Security representative,
will be on campus Tuesday, March 18 to provide individual Social
Security and Medicare counseling. Employees of retirement age
(62 or older) may schedule an appointment by contacting the Human
Resources Department at 5-6113 or 5-1478.
Isenberg Award applications due March 3
Applications for the Eugene M. Isenberg Awards are
due Monday, March 3. The awards are made generally in the form
of an assistantship in amounts up to $10,000. Graduate students
in the sciences, engineering and management are eligible and invited
to apply.

EWC plans heart-making workshop for survivor
art show
Everywoman's Center is sponsoring "Healing
the Wounded Heart: Survivor Art Exhibit" in the Student Union
Art Gallery from April 7-11. Hearts are available to be decorated
by survivors of sexual assault and their partners, friends, and
family members.
There will be a heart-making workshop open to all
members of the campus community on Friday, March 7 from 10 a.m.-2
p.m. in 174-76 Lincoln Campus Center. Advanced registration is
required; contact the Educator/Advocate Program at 5-2586.
Faculty Senate meeting cancelled
The Faculty Senate's meeting scheduled for Thursday,
Feb. 27, has been cancelled.
Healthy women wanted to participate in nutrition
study
Researchers in the Nutrition Department are looking for healthy
postmenopausal women to participate in a study on the effects
of dietary flaxseed consumption on hormone levels in blood and
urine.
Participants must have undergone a natural menopause,
and not have taken any hormones, including estrogen replacement
therapy, for the past six months; be non-smokers and have no prior
medical history of cancer, diabetes or bowel disease.
Qualified individuals need to plan on participating
in the study for four months. Financial compensation will be provided.

Five College Faculty Dance Concert
The Five College Dance Department will present its
Faculty Dance Concert on Thursday and Friday, Feb. 27-28 and Saturday,
March 1 at 8 p.m. in the Studio Theatre, Kendall Hall, Mount Holyoke
College.
The program consists of the seminal modern work
"Suspension" by May O'Donnell and the choreographic
work of Jim Coleman and Therese Freedman of Mount Holyoke; associate
professor of Dance Billbob Brown; and guest artists Mark Davis,
Smith College; Annie Dowling and Julie Lichtenberg, Amherst College;
and Fritha Pengelly, Hampshire College.
A reception follows the Friday performance.
Tickets are $10 general public and $5 for students
and senior citizens.
An open dress rehearsal is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 26 at
8 p.m. Admission is $2.

Men needed for diabetes study
The Energy Metabolism Laboratory is currently studying
different methods of screening and diagnosing people with either
pre-diabetes or Type-2 diabetes.
Men who have or who are concerned about Type-2 diabetes
are needed to serve as subjects.
Participants will receive a free diabetes screening
with results that may be taken to a doctor; a bone density scan
and body fat analysis.

Balloting for State Board of Retirement
Mail-in balloting for a seat on the State Board
of Retirement is currently underway.
Ballots, voting instructions and biographical sketches
of the 11 candidates were recently mailed to the home addresses
of state employees eligible to vote in the election.
Ballots must be received by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March
18.

Exercise Science study seeking pregnant women
The Exercise Science department is seeking pregnant
women in all trimesters to participate in a research study validating
a physical activity questionnaire. Participation involves two
meetings lasting approximately 30 minutes. Subjects will be paid
$50 for their participation.

Business workshop looks at understanding
cash flow
The Franklin County Chamber of Commerce and the
Western Mass. Regional Office of the Massachusetts Small Business
Development Center Network (MSBDC) will present "Understanding
Your Company's Cash Flow" on Thursday, Feb. 27, 3-5 p.m.
at the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce, 395 Main St., Greenfield.
Presented by Robb D. Morton, managing partner of
Boisselle, Morton & Sansom, LLP, the workshop will focus on
the basics of cash flow, how to determine a company's cash flow,
how cash flow can be improved and how cash flow is different from
profit.
The registration fee for this program is $25 and

MSBDC offers workshop on 'QuickBooks'
The Western Mass. Regional Office of the Massachusetts
Small Business Development Center Network (MSBDC) and the Springfield
Enterprise Center will present "Better Understand Your Business
With QuickBooks" on Wednesday, Feb. 26, 8:30-10:30 a.m. at
the Springfield Enterprise Center, Computer Room, 1 Federal St.,
Springfield.
Audrey Chirgswin of Chirgwin Computer & Accounting,
a family-owned business in Feeding Hills that provides accounting
and software services, will lead the session.
The workshop will help participants to better understand
the overall profitability of their businesses; determine how well
their business is doing compared to the last quarter or last year;
and learn how to evaluate customer open or overdue balances.
The registration fee for this program is $35 and

UMass Arts Council grant applications due
Feb. 26
The next deadline to apply for UMass Arts Council
grants is noon on Wednesday, Feb. 26.
Student groups, academic departments and other campus
organizations can apply for up $750 to support arts events held
on campus after March 3. Individuals may not apply.
Grant guidelines and applications are available
at the Campus Activities Office in the Student Union and the Arts
Council office in 101-103 Hasbrouck Lab. Forms are also available
online (www.umass.edu/fac/artscouncil).
Everywoman's Center lists spring groups
The following weekly groups are being offered by
Everywoman's Center Counseling Services.
"Keepin' It Real With the One You Love: Pathways
to Successful Relationships." Through discussion and activities,
the group will address various ways to improve communication,
become more self-aware, resolve conflict and have more fulfilling
and successful relationships. Women of all sexual orientations
are welcome. "Coming Out: A Group for Lesbian and Bisexual
Women." A safe space to explore the journey of coming out
to yourself, family, friends and others.
Both groups meet weekly for six weeks and are free
of charge and open to women from the Five College and surrounding

Phi Beta Kappa annual meeting
The annual meeting of Phi Beta Kappa will take place
on Thursday, March 6 at 4 p.m. in 301 Herter lounge. New members
from the classes of 2003 and 2004 will be elected. Other items
of business include the election of officers, discussion of the
commencement ceremony, and the approval of a new constitution
and bylaws as required by the national office.
New faculty not yet on the society's list-serve

Blood drive
The Hampshire County Chapter of the American Red
Cross will conduct a blood drive on Wednesday, Feb. 26, 10:30
a.m.-4:30 p.m. in 174 Lincoln Campus Center.
