Volunteers needed for inaugural events

Organizers of next month's inauguration of Chancellor John V. Lombardi are seeking volunteers from the campus community to assist with planned activities, including the ceremony and associated academic symposia.

The time commitments vary according to event:

On Feb. 6, activities will include greeting symposia attendees, responding to questions about scheduled events and locations. Volunteers are needed for two-hour slots between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m.

On Thursday evening, a dinner will take place at the Mullins Center. Volunteers are needed to handle registration, check coats, and serve as escorts for guests from 5:30-10 p.m.

On Feb. 7, activities include registering guests at the Mullins Center, functioning as escorts for people who use the bus shuttle service, escorting some guests to reserved seating areas, answering questions about the University and the inauguration, and helping organize the processionals of visiting delegates, faculty, and the platform party. The time commitment is five hours (7:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.).

Volunteers are asked to attend one training session. To volunteer, complete the electronic volunteer form at the inauguration Web site (www.umass.edu/inauguration/volunteer) by Jan. 24.

Assignments will be confirmed prior to the event.
