Rep. Story schedules district office hours

Rep. Ellen Story (D-Amherst) is holding district office hours as follows:
Thursday, Dec. 5, 8, 3-4 p.m., Pelham Community Center Library
Friday, Dec. 6, 9:30-10:30 a.m., Bangs Community Center in Amherst
The hours are set aside for residents to talk to Story about ideas or concerns related to state government programs or legislative matters. No appointments are needed.

First Friday at Renaissance Center

The Renaissance Center continues its First Fridays series on Friday, Dec. 6 with an open house from 4-6 p.m. The center's newest acquisitions of rare books and other materials will be on display. Refreshments will be served.

The center is located at 650 East Pleasant St.

Deadline for submissions to the Guide to Undergraduate Programs

Contributors to the Guide to Undergraduate Programs (the successor to the Undergraduate Catalog) should submit their revisions no later than Monday, Dec. 2 to the University Editor, Creative Services, Munson Hall. Contact the editor at 5-0123 with any questions.

Print Services offers high-quality color copies

The Print Services Department, is now offering high-quality color copying to the campus community. Print Services is evaluating color copiers from several different vendors and manufacturers to ensure that the final choice of equipment best matches customer needs.

Individuals or departments with color copying needs can visit 151 Whitmore or call 5-2718 to arrange for their color copy jobs to be produced, or to get further information.

Print Services encourages as much participation as possible from customers during this evaluation process so that future customer needs will be met with the most suitable equipment.

'Leaders in the Making' scholarship applications

Applications for the Alumni Association's "Leaders in the Making" Scholarships are due in the Alumni Relations Office by Friday, Nov. 22.

"The Leaders in the Making" Scholarship Program was created by the Alumni Association to support the academic and career pursuits of promising sophomores and juniors from diverse campus populations whose records suggest that they will develop into alumni with admirable leadership qualities upon graduation.

Four $2,000 scholarships will be awarded. To be eligible, applicants must be full-time sophomores and juniors who demonstrate distinctive character, leadership and motivation through active University, community or civic service. Applicants must also submit a letter of reference from a faculty or staff member, an unofficial academic transcript, a resume and an essay.
Applications are available weekdays 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Alumni Relations Office in Memorial Hall.

Kaffeepause

The Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures is offering a Kaffeepause on Wednesday, Dec. 4, from noon-2 p.m. in the fifth floor lobby of Herter Hall. All are welcome to join in German conversation and enjoy free coffee and snacks.

Biweekly paychecks for the period of Nov. 3-16 will be issued Friday, Nov. 22.


Breast-feeding and bone density study

A research project is recruiting women for a study on breast-feeding and bone density. If you are breast-feeding or pregnant and planning to breast-feed, and want to know more about your bone density, contact Karen Pearce at 374-3091 (days), 367-9742 (evenings), or via e-mail (klp@anthro.umass.edu).

Molecular Genetics and Microbiology seminar

Ravindra N. Singh of the Department of Medicine at the UMass Medical School will discuss "Understanding alternative splicing of the SMN gene through evolutionary selection" on Friday, Nov. 22 at 12:15 p.m. in the MGM Seminar Room, S5-310 of the Worcester campus.

Sports Luncheons resume Dec. 4

There will be no Weekly Sports Luncheon next week due to the Thanksgiving holiday.

The lunches will return Wednesday, Dec. 4 when hockey coach Don "Toot" Cahoon, women's basketball coach Marnie Dacko and men's basketball coach Steve Lappas will be the featured speakers at noon in 1009 Lincoln Campus Center.

The buffet lunch is $6.50. Call 5-4289 for reservations.

Blood drive

The Hampshire County Chapter of the American Red Cross will conduct a blood drive on Tuesday, Nov. 26 from 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. in 174 Lincoln Campus Center.

Faculty Senate meeting

The Faculty Senate will meet Thursday, Dec. 5 at 3:30 p.m. in 227 Herter Hall.

Reserve listings

Reserve listings for wintersession and spring semester should be submitted to the Library by Wednesday, Dec. 4.

Faculty Research Grant applications

The deadline to submit Faculty Research Grant applications to the Office of Research Affairs, 517 Goodell, is Friday, Dec. 6.

Summer session course proposals

Proposed course offerings for the 2003 Summer Session should be submitted to the Continuing Education Academic Programs Office by Thursday, Dec. 5.
