Awards, dedications top Homecoming calendar

T his year's Homecoming Weekend, scheduled for Oct. 11-13, promises something for everyone - music, awards, athletic events, a young alumni gathering and special programs showcasing academic programs.

     Highlights of the three-day celebration will include the dedication of the Harold Alfond Management Center at the Isenberg School of Management, the unveiling of a minuteman statue given by the Class of 1950, the annual Multiband Pops concert and of course, a football game versus the University of Maine Black Bears.

     Homecoming will begin Friday with an invitation-only luncheon where Chancellor John V. Lombardi will bestow the Chancellor's Medal on six individuals and two organizations in recognition of their support of the University, personal accomplishments or contributions to society.

     In the afternoon, the College of Engineering will host a research showcase and laboratory tour from 2-3:30 p.m. at the Gunness Student Center in Marcus Hall.

     At 3 p.m., the $16 million Harold Alfond Management Center will be dedicated. Speakers will include Lombardi, President William M. Bulger, Isenberg School dean Thomas O'Brien and the school's major benefactors, Eugene M. Isenberg, '50, and Harold Alfond. The program includes refreshments, student-led tours and presentations on what the new wing means for business education at the Isenberg School.

     Also at 3 p.m., the women's soccer team faces La Salle at Rudd Beginning at 7 p.m., the UMass field hockey team plays Richmond at Garber Field.

     The Department of Music and Dance presents its 28th annual Multiband Pops concert at 8 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center Concert Hall. Produced by professor Jeffrey Holmes, the performance features the Chapel Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble I, Percussion Ensemble, Symphony Band, UMass Marimbas, University Dancers, and the Vocal Jazz Ensemble and Wind Ensemble.

     Army ROTC will host an open house from 9:30 a.m. to noon. For information, call Maj. Sharon Bucciarelli at 5-2321.

     Isenberg School of Management Harold Alfond Management Center is hosting an open house, starting at 10 a.m.

     A Communication Department open house is scheduled for 10-11 a.m. in 120 South College, where the department's TV studio is located. Communication alumni and friends of the program are welcome to attend the dedication of the studio in memory of Ed O'Neill.

     The School of Nursing is hosting a reunion luncheon and presentation from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Cape Cod Lounge, Student Union. The keynote speaker is Karen L. Miller, dean and professor, University of Kansas School of Nursing. MaryAnn Hogan, '76, and Erin Lamoureux, '99G, will serve as faculty panelists. The reunion presentation is entitled "Partnerships in Practice." For information, contact the School of Nursing Development Office at 5-1766 or by e-mail (hao@nursing.umass.edu).

     Homecoming Park/ MinuteFAN Park, co-sponsored by the Athletic Department and the Alumni Association, will debut at Dallas Mall at McGuirk Alumni Stadium from 10:30 a.m.-12:50 p.m. Alumni, families and friends are invited to enjoy special activities at Homecoming Park (see story, page 6). Additional sponsors include the College of Engineering, Commonwealth College, Varsity M Club, and the Class of 1977.

     The Class of 1977 will hold its 25th reunion lunch from 11 a.m.-12:45 p.m. at McGuirk Alumni Stadium. Pre-registration is required. Call 5-2317 or visit the Alumni Association Web site (www.UMassAlumni.com).

     The Alumni Association lunch will be held at Homecoming Park/MinuteFAN Park from 11 a.m.-12:45 p.m. at the stadium. Alumni Association members can receive a complimentary lunch by showing their membership cards.

     The Athletic Fund pre-game tailgate is scheduled for 11 a.m.- 1 p.m. at the southwest corner of the stadium. Members of the UMass Athletic Fund Council are invited to attend this pre-game tailgate.

     The Alumni Band pre-game barbecue starts at 11:30 a.m. Pre-registration is required.
A fraternity barbecue for Alpha Sigma Phi, Sigma Epsilon and Delta Chi alumni will be held at noon at 118 Sunset Ave. Contact Jason Fossella (jfossell@student.umass.edu) for more information.

     The Minutemen take on the University of Maine in football at 1 p.m. For tickets, call the Athletic Ticket Office (5-0810).

     A Young Alumni Gathering follows the game from 3-5 p.m. at Charlie's in Amherst center.

     On Sunday, the women's soccer team plays Fordham at 1 p.m. at Rudd Field.
The hockey teams opens its season versus Boston College at 5 p.m. at the Mullins Center.
