New leadership stepping in at
2 schools and 10 departments

ith the fall semester about to begin, the College
of Social and Behavioral Sciences, the School of Education and 10
academic departments have new leadership.
At CSBS, Legal Studies
professor and chair Janet Rifkin is taking over as interim dean,
filling the spot vacated by Glen Gordon, who is retiring after 38
years on the faculty. Bailey W. Jackson, who led the School of Education
since 1990, is also stepping down this week, but to return to the
faculty. Andrew Effrat, professor and chair of Educational Policy,
Research and Administration, is taking over as interim dean.
In turn, assistant professor
Joseph Berger has been named interim chair of EPRA and Ronald Pipkin
is filling the spot vacated by Rifkin.
Professor Peter Monson
is the new acting head of Chemical Engineering. Michael Malone is
on sabbatical.
In the College of Natural
Sciences and Mathematics, professor Bruce Turkington is the new
head of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. He succeeds
Donald St. Mary, who retired. In the Physics Department, Jon Machta
is the new department head. He replaces John Donoghue, who returned
to teaching.
Within the College of
Food and Natural Resources, Veterinary and Animal Sciences head
Robert Duby retired. His post is now held by professor Samuel Black.
At the College of Humanities
and Fine Arts, retirements also spurred changes in two departments.
In Theater, associate professor Harley Erdman is the new chair,
filling the post previously shared by Ed Golden, who retired, and
Penny Remsen, who returned to teaching. Professor Chisato Kitagawa
retired as head of Asian Languages and Literatures, handing his
duties to Donald Gjertson.
In the Isenberg School
of Management, Ronald Mannino is the new chair of Accounting and
Information Systems. The pre-vious chair, James Smith, stepped down
to return to faculty duties.
