Retirement celebration for Michael Weinberg

Interim Vice Chancellor for Research Fred Byron invites friends and colleagues to a retirement celebration for Michael Weinberg, special assistant to the vice chancellor, on Thursday, June 6, 4-6 p.m. in the Honors Lounge, 504 Goodell. Hors d'oeuvres and chocolate will be available.

Retirement reception for Betty Brace

A reception will be held Friday, June 7 for the Library's coordinator of User Support Services, Betty Brace, who is retiring after 35 years of service.

The reception will take place from 4-6 p.m. in the Tippo Courtyard Garden of the Du Bois Library. All are welcome to attend.

Contributions towards a gift may be sent to Nancy Wonsey, Library Office, Du Bois Library, by May 25.

Retirement dinner for Gloria Ortiz

A reception and dinner will be held on Wednesday, June 12 for associate director of Equal Opportunity & Diversity Gloria Ortiz, who is retiring.

The event will be held at the Hickory Ridge Country Club in Amherst, and is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. Those planning to attend must RSVP by May 30 to Jamie Cimino at 5-3465. The cost is $30, which includes a contribution for a gift.

School of Nursing salutes Mary Mireault

The University community is invited to join the School of Nursing in celebrating the retirement of Mary T. Mireault, who has served the University for 23 years. An open house is planned for Wednesday, May 29, 4-5:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall.

Reception for Merle Ryan

The Dean of Students Office is planning a reception to thank and honor assistant dean Merle Ryan, who is retiring after many years of service to the University. The reception will be held Friday, June 7, 4-6 p.m. in 1009 Lincoln Campus Center. All are welcome to attend.

Contributions for a gift can be sent to associate dean Gladys Rodriguez, 227 Whitmore, by May 31.

Reception for Shirley Kolosewicz

The Dean of Students Office is having an open house to thank and honor Shirley Kolosewicz who is retiring after 25 years of service to the University. The open house will be Monday, June 10 from 2-4 p.m. in the Dean of Students Office, 227 Whitmore.

Final grades due

Final grades for spring semester should be submitted by noon on Wednesday, May 29 to the undergraduate, graduate and Continuing Education registrars' offices.

Memorial Day

Memorial Day will be observed as a state holiday on Monday, May 27. Most University offices will be closed.

Retirement reception for Maryelise and Sterling Lamet

The International Programs Office is hosting a reception on Friday, June 7 in honor of Maryelise and Sterling Lamet, who are retiring after 26 years of campus service. Maryelise Lamet is deputy director of International Programs and director of Education Abroad, while Sterling Lamet is associate director of IPO and Study Abroad registrar.

The reception will be held 4-7 p.m. at the University Club.

UCard Office closed May 29

The UCard Office will be closed to the public on Wednesday, May 29 for system maintenance. ID card production services will not be available that day. In addition, UCard debit cards will not be able to make purchases from vending machines; campus sales outlets also may decline acceptance of the card because they will be unable to verify balances.

Reception for Richard Clarity

A reception will be held Wednesday, May 29 for Mail Services manager Richard Clarity, who is retiring from the University after 31 years of service. The reception will be from 3-6 p.m. at the University Club.

Biochemistry and Molecular Pharmacology seminar

Olga Gursky of the physiology and biophysics department at the Boston University School of Medicine will discuss "Energetics-Structure-Function of Human Apolipoproteins" on Wednesday, May 29 at noon in the Hiatt Auditorium, Goff Learning Center at the Worcester campus.

4-H history exhibit opening

A special exhibition of items tracing the history of 4-H in Massachusetts will be celebrated Wednesday, May 29 at a reception in the Tippo Courtyard and Sculpture Garden in the Du Bois Library from 3-5 p.m.

The display, "100 Years of 4-H: The University's Commitment to the Youth of the Commonwealth, 1902-2002," features memorabilia from University and Extension archives.

Reception planned for Kay Scanlan

Communications and Marketing is hosting a reception on Tuesday, June 4 for interim assistant vice chancellor Kay Scanlan, who is retiring after 26 years of campus service. Scanlan began her career here in 1976 as editor of The Alumnus. She joined the News Office staff in 1989 and was named its acting director and then director in 1996. Three years ago, she was appointed to her current post.

All members of the campus community are invited to attend the event from 3-5 p.m. at the University Club.

Cambridge scholar leads Medical School seminar

Vassilis Koronakis of the department of pathology at the University of Cambridge will speak on "The ABC of Salmonella Entry" on Friday, May 31 at 12:15 p.m. in the MGM Seminar Room, S5-310 of the Medical School in Worcester.

Retirement dinner planned for Ron Lenois

A retirement dinner in honor of Ronald Lenois, assistant director of Physical Plant for Custodial Services will be held Saturday, June 22, 6-9 p.m. at the Top of the Campus in the Lincoln Campus Center. Lenois is retiring after 32 years of service.

The cost is $20, which includes dinner and gift. A cash bar will be available. To purchase tickets or contribute toward a gift, call Donald Sullivan at 7-1007 or John Putala 5-6463.

Reception for Controller's Office retirees

A reception is being held on Thursday, May 30 for members of the Controller's Office -- Irene Grybko, Sherry Jourdan, Kathy Maia, Sue Mew, Dolores Parsons and Barbara Reynolds -- who are retiring from the University after many years of service.

The reception is scheduled for 2-4 p.m. in the 5th floor lounge of Goodell. All friends and associates are invited to attend.

Tapes of the undergraduate Commencement ceremony can be ordered for $30 by contacting UVC-TV19, 216 Student Union, 5-1283.

Steam system shutdown scheduled to start May 28

The campus's central steam and power plant is scheduled to operate under minimum load beginning at 5 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28 until noon on Friday, June 15.

The shutdown will permit preventive and corrective maintenance to be performed on the steam distribution system and power plant.

Heat and hot water will be affected in Curry Hicks for the duration of the shutdown.

Heat and hot water will be affected in Gorman House from June 3-8.

Kitchen equipment, heat and hot water will be affected in Van Meter, Butterfield, Chadbourne, Greenough, Baker, New Africa House and the apiary between May 28 and June 1.

Air conditioning, kitchen equipment, heat and hot water will be affected in Southwest residence halls and dining commons from May 28 to June 15.

In the Lederle Graduate Research Center and Conte Polymer Research Center, the shutdown will affect autoclaves and lab equipment from May 28 to June 15.

Parking permit renewals

Parking Services recently mailed permit renewal applications to campus employees. Completed applications should be submitted by Monday, June 17.

Retirement reception for Patricia Manfredi

UMass Extension is hosting a reception on Monday, June 10 in honor of assistant director Patricia Manfredi, who is retiring after 35 years of service. The reception is scheduled for 3-5 p.m. in 1109 Lincoln Campus Center.

Indian consul general to visit

Shashi Tripathi, the consul general of India in New York, will discuss the professional and academic contributions of Indians and Indian-Americans in U.S. during a visit to campus on Tuesday, June 28.

Tripathi will meet with faculty, staff and students over lunch and address a public forum at 3 p.m. on the main floor of the Du Bois Library. Members of the area Indian community will offer a traditional welcome by lighting a ceremonial lamp and offering flowers, accompanied by music and dance.

In the evening, the Indian Association of Greater Springfield will host a dinner in her honor in Springfield.

As a foreign service officer with India's ministry of external affairs, Tripathi has held a number of diplomatic posts, including minister in Germany; high commissioner in Zimbabwe; counsellor with the High Commission of India in Canada; first secretary in Moscow; and deputy consul general in Pakistan. She has been the consul general in New York since 1998.

The event is sponsored by the Asian Dance and Music Program, International Programs, Du Bois Library and the Provost's Office.
