Obituaries

Mary Jane Henry

Mary Jane Henry, 82, of South Hadley, a retired principal clerk in the Water Resources Research Center, died March 20.

She served the University for 14 years before retiring in 1985.
Her former husband, Carl W. Henry, died in 1999.

She leaves two sons, David C. of Mansfield, Conn., and Stephen D. of Kensington, Conn.; and four grandchildren.

Henry J. Walas

Henry J. Walas, 75, of Belchertown, a retired maintainer in Housing Services, died March 16.

He served the University for 11 years before retiring in 1989.

A graduate of Hopkins Academy in Hadley, he owned and operated Maplewood Farm in Amherst with his wife, Irene.

Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Henry J. Jr. of Belchertown; two daughters, Nancy Eckert, a receptionist and administrative assistant at Five Colleges, Inc., of Belchertown and Susan of South Dartmouth; two brothers and four grandchildren.

Frederick L. Hmieleski

Frederick L. Hmieleski, 77, of Greenfield, a former janitor in Housing Services, died March 16.

He served the University for nearly five and a half years before resigning in 1984. Prior to his University service, he was a self-employed barber for more than 30 years.

A resident of Greenfield since 1946, he attended Turners Falls High School.
He leaves his wife of 56 years, the former Sylvia A. Siano; three sons, Roger of Clermont, Fla., Dennis of the state of Florida, and Mark of Putney, Vt.; a brother, a sister, four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Hugh W. Brown

Hugh W. "Brownie" Brown, 89, of Winchester, N.H., a retired motor truck driver in Physical Plant, died March 17 in Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield after a period of failing health.

He served the University for 14 and a half years before retiring in 1979.
A 1930 graduate of Turners Falls High School, he also had operated his own farm for many years.

He was a founding member of the Montague Center Volunteer Fire Department and served as a lieutenant, assistant chief and chief during his tenure.

He was married to the former Phyllis M. Bargeron for 64 years until she died in January 2001.

He leaves a daughter, Sheila P. Zabko, a lecturer in Teacher Education and Curriculum Studies, of Northfield; two granddaughters and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
