ROTC led by Schliemann
by Sarah R. Buchholz, Chronicle staff
ilitary Science has a new head of department this year, U.S. Army Major Bernd F. Schliemann. Supervising the teaching of ROTC students is his latest position in a more than 16-year career with the military.
"This is not a typical Army job," he said. "It's quite a change." Until arriving at the University this summer, Schliemann had been with the 20th Engineer Brigade at Fort Bragg, N.C., managing the operations of the 1,600-person (peacetime size) group and planning, coordinating and supervising the training, airborne and construction operations of a 568-person airborne combat engineer battalion.
Schliemann is no stranger to college-level instruction, though, having taught math to more than 400 cadets at the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., and led the teaching of three courses, taught by nine instructors, for two years.
"The Army's a lot about training, anyway," he said. Schliemann also is continuing his own training, taking courses at the Isenberg School of Management.
A 1985 graduate of West Point, he also completed the Engineer Officer's Basic and Advanced courses, airborne training, Combined Arms Services Staff School, Command and General Staff College, Ranger School, and Sapper, Jumpmaster, and Air Assault courses.
Schliemann also has served the Army in Germany, Korea and Fort Carson, Colo., and in Southwest Asia during Operation Desert Storm.
His awards include the Meritorious Service Medal (with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters), the Army Commendation Medal (with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters), the Army Achievement Medal (with 4 Oak Leak Clusters), Southwest Asia Service Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal, and the Saudi-Kuwait Liberation Medal. His decorations include the Air Assault and Senior Parachutist Badge and the Ranger Tab.
Married with two children, he is active in a number of sports, including alpine and water skiing, softball, boating and running. He also enjoys maintaining his car.
