Pre-registration dates set

All faculty and advisors are asked to remind undergraduates in their classes and departments that pre-registration for spring 2002 will take place Nov. 7-20. Invitations to pre-register were mailed out to students this week. Pre-registration guides can be picked up starting Monday, Nov. 5 in the lobby of Whitmore.

Pre-Major Advising Services recommends that students make appointments to meet with their advisors early to avoid the counseling week crunch.

Early payroll deadline

Due to the observance of the Veterans' Day on Monday, Nov. 12, all departments should submit Weekly Time and Attendance and student and non-student payroll by noon on Friday, Nov. 9.

Kaffeepause

The Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures is offering a Kaffeepause on Wednesday, Nov. 7, from noon-2 p.m. in the fifth floor lobby of Herter Hall. All are welcome to join in German conversation, a look at recent German television news, free coffee and snacks.

'State of Business Travel' forum rescheduled to Nov. 13

A forum on "The State of Business Travel," originally scheduled for Oct. 31, has been postponed until Tuesday, Nov. 13.

Representatives of the campus's designated travel agencies, Carroll Travel and Worldtek Travel, will lead the presentation, which will be held 1-2:30 p.m. in the Massachusetts Room of the Mullins Center.

University business travelers and travel preparers are invited to attend the session, which will present information about the latest status of the airline, hotel and car rental industries. Information also will be provided on travel procedures and where to find the latest airport and security updates, as well as key information for international travel.

RSVP by e-mail (dcomeau@admin.umass.edu) by Nov. 8. Parking is available in the visitor parking section of Lot 67 on the Mullins Center's west side.

Blood drive

The American Red Cross is conducting a blood drive on Monday, Nov. 5, 10:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. in the Lincoln Campus Center. Check the building schedule for room number.

WFCR benefit postponed

"Patience for the Harvest: Parallel Portraits of Jenny Lind and Emily Dickinson," a benefit performance for WFCR-FM scheduled for Nov. 1, has been postponed because actress Jill Clayburgh is ill. The performance may be rescheduled, said station officials.

Tickets for the show may be returned for a refund or exchanged for one of WFCR's other upcoming events: A Dec. 6 talk by Linda Wertheimer, host of National Public Radio's "All Things Considered," or a March 14 appearance by David Brancaccio, senior editor of Public Radio International's "Marketplace." Both events are scheduled for Mount Holyoke College's Chapin Auditorium at 7:30 p.m.

Gierasch presents seminar at Medical School

"Local and Global Sequence Information in the Folding of a Predominantly ß-Sheet Protein" will be discussed by Lila Gierasch, professor and chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology on Wednesday, Nov. 7 at noon at the Medical School in Worcester.

The seminar takes place in the Hiatt Auditorium of the Goff Learning Center.

Sports Luncheon recognizes academic excellence

The Weekly Sports Luncheon on Wednesday, Nov. 7 will be a special program honoring the academic accomplishments of student-athletes. The featured speakers will be Isenberg School of Management dean Thomas O'Brien and football coach Mark Whipple.

The luncheon begins at noon in the Student Union Ballroom. The cost of the buffet lunch is $6.50. Call 5-4289 for reservations.

Molecular Genetics and Microbiology seminars

The Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology at the Medical School is hosting the following talks:

"Developmental regulation of DNA replication and mitosis," Terry Orr-Weaver, professor of biology, Whitehead Institute, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Friday, Nov. 2.

"Molecular Mechanism of Angiogenesis," Tom Maciag, director of the Center for Molecular Medicine at the Maine Medical Center Research Institute, Friday, Nov. 9.

Both begin at 12:15 p.m. in the MGM Seminar Room, S5-310 of the school.
