Experience adds up for new controller

Andrew Mangels

The University's new controller, Andrew Mangels, comes to campus after nearly 11 years in the controller's office at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, where he served for six years as director of accounting.

His positions at Johns Hopkins covered student loans, cash accounting, accounts payable sponsored receivables and general accounting.

"I was looking for a change and some new challenges," said Mangels, who has been at his new post since Aug. 1.

"I've been very impressed with the collegiality of everybody here and the experience of the staff in the Controller's Office. I'm glad to be part of the team."

"We are fortunate that Andy has chosen to join our campus community," said Joyce Hatch, associate vice chancellor for Finance and Budget.

In addition to the annual financial audit, his biggest projects will be implementing PeopleSoft and new reporting and accounting guidelines for public institutions that must be in place by the end of the current fiscal year, he said.

A history and chamber music enthusiast, Mangels also enjoys playing tennis and golf and watching sports, including college basketball. He and his wife, Brenda, were happy to move their family of three children to a small town, he said, and as a Connecticut native, he has prior connections to New England.

Mangels has a bachelor's degree in business administration from the College of William and Mary and an MBA from Johns Hopkins.
