New guide to campus galleries published
by Sarah R. Buchholz, Chronicle staff
ew guide to the campus's six art galleries and eight alternative exhibition spaces is available to faculty, staff and students.
Just published by the UMass Arts Council, the UMass Gallery Guide is a definitive listing of all the exhibition spaces on campus, as well as other places of interest that offer visual arts programs for the University community, according to Maren Brown, director of the council.
Brown noted that the council provides financial support for the campus' six main galleries and publishes a quarterly poster listing exhibitions and related programs at the exhibition areas. The new guide, she said, "is a natural extension of what we already do with the UMass galleries poster."
The 21-page illustrated brochure includes a map showing the location of each exhibition space, description of the individual galleries, hours of operation, phone numbers and Web site addresses. Each site listing also notes whether the space is open during the academic year, the availability of nearby rest rooms or refreshments and if the area is accessible to the disabled.
The guide also provides information about the Massachusetts Center for Renaissance Studies, Student Union Craft Center, Art Department and the Arts Council.
"This is the first time our campus has had such a complete reference for visual arts programs and exhibition spaces at the University," said Brown. "Many students, staff and faculty have expressed interest in such a guide, and we are happy to respond to their requests for such a resource."
Members of the campus community can obtain free copies of the guide at the UMass Arts Council Office in 101-103 Hasbrouck, the Robsham Visitors Center and the Lincoln Campus Center information desk. While supplies last, copies will also be made available to faculty for distribution to students in their classes, said Brown.
The UMass Arts Council is also planning to put the guide on its Web site (www.umass.edu/fac/artscouncil).
