Retirement reception for Wayne Cournoyer

Wayne Cournoyer, director of Publications, is retiring on Aug. 3 after 14 years of campus service.

A reception in his honor will be held Thursday, Aug. 2 from 3-5 p.m. in Memorial Hall.

Proposed Winter Session courses should be submitted to the Continuing Education Academic Programs Office by Wednesday, Aug. 8.


Volunteers needed for Special Olympics

Volunteers are needed to assist with the Special Olympics Massachusetts sports tournament to be held on campus the weekend of Aug. 11-12.

Volunteer duties include set-up, serving breakfast and dinner, assisting at the opening ceremonies and helping at local competition sites in Belchertown, Amherst and Easthampton.

Graduate degree requirements

Graduate program directors are reminded to inform candidates to receive graduate degrees dated Sept. 1, 2001, that all requirements must be completed and all documents submitted to the Graduate School's Office of Degree Requirements, 534A Goodell, by Friday, Aug. 31. No extensions of the deadline will be granted and no certifications will be made retroactively, according to Patricia Stowell, associate graduate registrar.


GEO curriculum fee waiver rate revised

Graduate Employee Organization appointments for Fiscal Year 2002 have been revised to exclude summer appointments, according to a July 12 memo from William Shea, director of Financial and Cost Analysis.

The new charge of $1,982 per full-time equivalent (FTE) appointment will be charged to all revenue operation departmental accounts, including auxiliary, sales and services and student fee operations.

According to the memo, all fall and spring appointments of research assistants, project assistants, assistant residence directors, teaching assistants and associates, interns and working fellows will be calculated as a percentage of the FTE rate, which equals 760 hours of employment for the year.

Charges for FY02 will be assessed to accounts beginning in September using object code 8690.


Annual Community Breakfast scheduled for Aug. 30

The annual Community Breakfast, hosted by the University in cooperation with the Amherst Area Chamber of Commerce, will be held Thursday, Aug. 30, 7:45-9 a.m., at the Franklin Dining Commons.

Open to the public, the event marks the opening of the new academic term and affords local government officials, business leaders and members of the academic community an opportunity to discuss the year ahead.

The cost is $4.75 per person, payable at the door. Call 5-4200 by Aug. 24 to make reservations.

Limited parking is available in Lot 62 and carpooling is advised.


Pregnant women sought for study of physical activity

Researchers in the Department of Exercise Science are seeking pregnant women to participate in a study assessing physical activity during pregnancy.

Subjects should be in their first or second trimester. Participation requires two visits to campus with each session lasting about an hour. During the first visit, participants will perform daily household tasks such as dusting, washing windows, doing laundry and vacuuming. The second visit requires walking for three 10-minute periods.

Study participants will be paid $100.

Printing Services advises customers of possible delays

Printing Services is upgrading equipment and conducting staff training sessions through Aug. 3. The department is open and operating but there may be delays in the production of some jobs as the digital printing capabilities at Printing Services are improved to serve customers better.

Customers with upcoming print jobs that are time sensitive should contact Leo St. Denis at 5-2718 for assistance in scheduling the work.


Discounts on arboretum calendars through Aug. 15

Discounts on the 2002 Waugh Arboretum Calendar are available until Aug. 15. Calendars will be available for distribution the first week of October.

The calendar celebrates the heritage trees of the campus through the original artwork of 15 Valley artists, who were specially commissioned for the project. Proceeds from the sale of the calendar will help to maintain and preserve the arboretum.

Prices range from $11.95 each for orders of fewer than 25 to $5.95 each for orders of at least 100, if ordered by the deadline. Each calendar purchased after Aug. 15 will cost $2 more.
