Professor praises support for organ donation

I was pleased to read the story in your Jan. 5 issue about the appeal to state employees to consider posthumous donation of their organs and tissues. Ever since receiving a liver transplant 15 years ago I have been involved with various transplant organizations as a volunteer. It seems that many people do not realize that in order to become a potential donor they must carry an organ donor card and note so on their driver's license, and they must inform their families of the decision.

Thousands of lives could be saved if more would sign up as potential organ donors.

Organ transplants work. I am living proof of it.

ARNOLD FRIEDMANN
professor emeritus,
Department of Art
