Math skills exemption test
The R1 (Tier 1) Basic Math Skills Exemption
Test is being administered five times during spring semester.
The dates are Jan. 29, Feb. 7, March 14,
April 2 and May 16. The test site for all five dates is 131 Marcus
Hall. The exams begin at 6:30 p.m.
Topics include perimeter, area, volume, linear
equations, averages, fractions, ratios, compound interest and
percent increase and decrease.
An ID and No. 2 pencil are required; calculators
are optional.
Wintersession grades due
Final grades for Wintersession are due at
the Continuing Education Registrar's Office by Wednesday, Jan.
31.
Special seminar at Medical School
Professor Yukasu Nakabeppu of the department
of biochemistry at Kyushu University's Medical Institute of Bioregulation,
will present a special seminar on Wednesday, Jan. 31 at 2 p.m.
in the MGM Seminar Room, S5-310 of the Medical School in Worcester.
Nakabeppu will discuss "Mechanisms Protecting
Genomic Integrity from Damage Caused by Reactive Oxygen Species:
Implications in Cancer and Neurodegenerative Diseases."
Joint evening exam requests
The last day for departments to submit requests
to the Academic Scheduling Office for joint evening examinations
for the spring semester is Friday, Feb. 2.
Final examination requirements
Departments should submit final examination
requirements to the Academic Scheduling Office by Friday, Feb.

Tickets for Godsmack on sale at Mullins
Godsmack will perform in concert at the Mullins
Center on Sunday, March 4 at 7 p.m. The opening act will be Staind,
Cold & Systematic.
Tickets are $28.50 and are on sale at the
Mullins Center Box Office, all Ticketmaster locations, all Filenes
stores and by phone at 733-2500. Tickets may also be purchased

Fall 2001 course proposals and scheduling materials
Department course proposals and scheduling
materials for fall 2001 should be submitted to the Academic Scheduling
Office by Friday, Feb. 2.
TIAA-CREF retirement counseling sessions
TIAA-CREF is offering individual retirement
counseling sessions on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 9 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. in
801 Lincoln Campus Center and Thursday, Feb. 15, 9 a.m.-3:45 p.m.
in 902 Lincoln Campus Center.
Employees with questions about the Optional
Retirement Program, tax-deferred annuities or retirement savings
are welcome to attend.
Campus employees are also welcome to attend
several financial education presentations offered by TIAA-CREF:
- "Asset Allocation," Feb. 28,
11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. or 1-2:30 p.m. in 804-08 Lincoln Campus Center;

Molecular Genetics and Microbiology seminars
The Department of Molecular Genetics and
Microbiology at the Medical School in Worcester is sponsoring
the following seminars:
- Ralph R. Isberg of the Howard Hughes Medical
Institute and the department of molecular biology and microbiology
at Tufts University, will speak on "Legionella pneumophilia
finds a nice round home" on Friday, Jan. 26.
- On Friday, Feb. 2, professor Louise T.
Chow of the department of biochemistry and molecular genetics
at the University of Alabama at Birmingham will discuss "Endogenous
Inhibitors of Cyclin-Dependent Kinases Modulate Human Papillomavirus."
Both seminars begin at 12:15 p.m. in the
MGM seminar room, S5-310.
'Toot' and 'Bruiser' headline Weekly Sports Luncheon
Hockey coach Don "Toot" Cahoon
and men's basketball coach James "Bruiser" Flint will
be the featured speakers at the Weekly Sports Luncheon on Wednesday,
Jan. 31 at noon in 1009 Lincoln Campus Center.
The buffet lunch is $6.50 per person. Call

Senior Leadership Awards nominations requested
Alumni Relations has extended the deadline
for nominations for the 2001 Senior Leadership Awards to Friday,
Jan. 26. The award recognizes graduating seniors who have demonstrated
outstanding leadership and service to the University community
and have a GPA of at least 2.5.

Library tours
Tours of the W.E.B. Du Bois Library will
be offered Jan. 29-Feb. 2 and Feb. 5-9 at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30
p.m. The tours leave from the entrance lobby and last about 45
minutes. Students, faculty, staff, and community members are invited
to attend.
Tours are also available at other times by
appointment. Call the Reference Desk (5-0150) to arrange a group
or individual tour.
Tours of the two science libraries are also
available by appointment. Call the Biological Sciences Library
(5-2674) or the Physical Sciences and Engineering Library (5-1370)
to schedule.
Baden-Württemberg directorship post
The post of resident director for the Baden-Württemberg
Exchange Program for 2001-02 is now open. Through a collaboration
with Indiana and Purdue universities, undergraduates from all
three institutions enroll at the University of Freiburg in Germany.
Candidates for resident director must be
tenured UMass faculty with doctorate, fluent in German and experienced
in graduate and undergraduate advising. Some acquaintance with
the German university system is desirable.
Candidates are invited to submit their curriculum
vitae by Jan. 26 to the Baden-Württemberg Program, International
Programs Office, William S. Clark International Center, 467 Hills
South.
