Interim chancellor named in Boston
Chronicle staff
ith a search for a new chancellor at the Boston
campus still moving ahead, President William M. Bulger last week
named Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance David J. MacKenzie
to serve as interim chancellor.
"As the
chief financial officer for the campus, Vice Chancellor MacKenzie
has been deeply engaged in every major issue facing the UMass Boston
community and its neighbors," said Bulger in a statement released
Dec. 29. "He has the ideal background to manage the Boston
campus during this period of transition, and prepare the campus
for the arrival of a new chancellor."
The appointment
comes as Chancellor Sherry Penney stepped down after a 12-year term
in office to return to the faculty. Penney's decision to step down
was announced last May and a national search for her successor was
launched last summer.
MacKenzie, whose
appointment was effective Jan. 1, served under Penney since August
1999.
"The new
year will bring many opportunities for the Boston campus,"
said MacKenzie last week. "I look forward to working with the
faculty, students and staff to set the stage for a new chancellor
and position the campus to seize every opportunity to excel."
The interim appointment
was also backed by Grace K. Fey, who chairs the Board of Trustees.
"I am confident that Vice Chancellor MacKenzie will do an outstanding
job in this critical role."
Before joining
the Boston campus administration, MacKenzie served six years as
general counsel to the Massachusetts Health and Educational Facilities
Authority. From 1979 to 1993, he served as staff director to the
Massachusetts Senate Ways and Means Committee. He holds a J.D. from
Northeastern University School of Law, an M.A. in psychology from
Stanford University and a B.A. from Wesleyan University.
