Faculty Senate plans to discuss deferring approval of M.S. and Ph.D.
programs in Marine Sciences and Technology at its Dec. 7 meeting.
The proposed graduate programs are part
of the Intercampus Graduate School in Marine Science and Technology
approved earlier this year by the Board of Trustees.
Because six Faculty Senate councils
and the Rules Committee have noted that a number of important operational
and resource issues in the proposed programs remain unclear and because
they expect the University's upcoming budget to be adversely affected
by the passage of Question 4, the Rules Committee plans to move to
defer approving the program until the groups' questions have been
answered.
"The question is not only, 'Do
these degree programs have merit?' but also, 'Can the institution
afford them at this time?'" says the report attached to the motion.
The senate also will consider a number
of other special reports at the meeting, including one concerning
the Center for Agriculture.
The meeting is scheduled for 3:30 in
227 Herter Hall and is open to the public. |
