HFA offers new faculty seminar

by Sarah R. Buchholz, Chronicle staff

A new faculty program, the Interdisciplinary Seminar in Humanities and Fine Arts, has been formed to generate discussion and interaction among faculty in all areas of the University.

"We're trying to provide a forum for thinking outside the borders of traditional disciplines in areas where humanities and fine arts play crucial roles, and we're very much hoping that this activity will attract participation from the widest possible collection of faculty," said Lee Edwards, dean of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts.

The theme for the spring semester's seminar is "reproduction." Project director Stephen Clingman said the theme is to be considered in its broadest sense.

"This can include biological and social issues, translation, copyright, even performance of music or dance," he said. "We are looking for a group of people who would like to explore their own particular 'take' on this topic in the company of others." The semester-long seminar will meet every other week, and leadership will rotate among participants, he said.

For information on applying to participate, contact Clingman by e-mail (clingman@english.umass.edu). The applications for spring 2001 are due Dec. 15.
