Indoor-outdoor fundraising comes
to the library
Students 'Doze for Dollars'
Sleeping in the library may be nothing
new for students, but a campus honor society is taking it to a new
level. Alpha Lambda Delta (ALD) members plan to spend the night
in the Du Bois Library Saturday, Nov. 18 in an effort to raise $2000
toward renovating the third-floor reading room.
Members are accepting pledges in exchange
for their overnight stay through ADL president Michelle Lee (6-1787).
"This is in honor of everyone
who has ever taken a nap in the library," said Eileen Stewart,
assistant dean of Students and ALD advisor. "I bet that's everyone
who's ever been to college."
ALD is open to students who achieve
a minimum grade point average of 3.7 in the first semester of their
freshman year.
Stewart said the group plans to have
videos and pizza during the event. "I hope we actually get
some sleep," she said.
Students highlight homelessness by sleeping
outside
Students
plan to spend this Friday night (Nov. 17) sleeping on the lawn in
front of the Du Bois Library to raise public awareness of homelessness.
The 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. program is one of several events planned as
part of Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, which concludes
Saturday.
Sponsored by the MassPIRG Student
Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness, "One Night Without
a Home" is also a fund-raising event in which participants
get people to sponsor them for every hour spent outside. Proceeds
will go to local homeless outreach programs and shelters.
