Strangers and Neighbors
Maurianne Adams, associate professor in the Social
Justice Education Program in the School of Education, and Afro-American
Studies professor John Bracey penned the cover story in the Nov.
3 issue of The Chronicle Review. The two are well-versed
on the subject matter. They co-taught a course on the topic and
co-edited a book, "Strangers and Neighbors: Relations Between
Blacks and Jews in the United States," published earlier
this year by the UMass Press.
Kudos
Professor Gary Kamen of the Department of
Exercise Science was recently inducted as a fellow in the American
Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education. Election to the
75-year-old academy is restricted to approximately 125 individuals
from around the world well-known for their contributions to the
field of kinesiology.
Bouncing back
John D. Kendall, retired head of Special Collections
and Rare Books, is recovering at his Prince Edward Island home
after undergoing surgery for a brain tumor. According to his son,
Thom, a photographer at Photo Services, Kendall is "doing
pretty well" after completing radiation treatments to the
30 percent of the tumor that could not be removed surgically.
In a note published in the Library Information Bulletin, Kendall
wrote, "At any rate, I am able to cope with the details of
daily life at home, and it's good to be heregood therapy,
too. I have even done a little cooking, and of course I can navigate
the house."

"The Last Place in the World,"
an exhibit about the former Northampton State Hospital by historian
Michael Moore, Chronicle photographer Stan Sherer and artist Anna
Schuleit, is on display at the Northampton Center for the Arts,
17 New South St., through Dec. 2 An opening reception is being
held Nov. 17, 7-9 p.m. The exhibit is part of "The State
Hospital: In Memoriam," a series of programs commemorating
the public mental health facility that closed in 1993. Details
