Questions linger
over terms of UMass Online blueprint
As the UMass Online initiative moves forward,
faculty here and at other University campuses are raising questions
about intellectual property issues, a union leader told the Faculty
Senate on Oct. 19.

The national search for a vice chancellor for
Research took a local turn late last week when officials announced
that one of the candidates is Computer Science professor W. Richards
Adrion.
Meet the candidate
M. Richards Adrion, division director for Experimental
and Integrative Activities at the National Science Foundation and
professor of Computer Science, will meet with faculty, staff and
postdoctoral researchers on Monday, Oct. 30 at 3 p.m. in 803 Lincoln
Campus Center.

Question 4, a ballot initiative to roll back
the state income tax rate, will be debated by Jim St. George from
the Campaign for Mass. Future and Bobby Matthews of the Tax Rollback
Committee on Wednesday, Nov. 1, 4:30-5:30 p.m. in 227 Herter Hall.

Though the appointment of Javier Cevallos as
the new vice chancellor for Student Affairs and Campus Life was
generally applauded at the Oct. 19 Faculty Senate meeting, some
senators raised questions about the hiring process.

data rules
The Faculty Senate meets Nov. 2 to focus on a
set of special reports about access to and retention of research
data and the establishment of a Center of Agriculture and to hear
a retrospective on Strategic Action by Chancellor David K. Scott.
Social Security chief
to give talk
Kenneth S. Apfel, commissioner of the Social
Security Administration (SSA), will give a talk, "The Future
of Social Security" on Friday, Nov. 3 at 9:30 a.m. in the 163
Lincoln Campus Center.
