Affairs receives reallocation of $1.475m
Cuts to the base budget of Academic Affairs have
been returned to the academic area via increases in funding for
research, Chancellor David K. Scott told the Faculty Senate at its
Sept. 21 meeting.
UMass presence
felt at Sydney Olympics
In water, on land and even in the air, the University
is well-represented at the Sydney Olympic games, which conclude
this weekend. Athletes and support staff who are alumni or employees
of the campus had a part in two gold and three bronze medals at
the end of Day 12 of the games on Sept. 27.
Pearson named associate
provost
Longtime administrator Susan Pearson has been
named associate provost for Development and Faculty Relations. Chancellor
David K. Scott and Senior Vice Chancellor and Provost Cora Marrett
announced the appointment last week.
Alleged misuse
of Physical Plant resources being investigated
Allegations that University resources were used
to repair an administrator's private home are under investigation,
according to Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance Paul
Page.
Former FBI official
returns as Bateman Alumni Scholar
James K. Kallstrom, '66, former assistant director
in charge of the FBI's New York division, returns to campus Oct.
2-4 as the Eleanor Bateman Alumni Scholar in Residence. The highlight
of his stay will be a public lecture titled "Combating Crime
in America: Then (1970-1990) and Now (1990-2010)" on Tuesday,
Oct. 3, 4-5 p.m. in Memorial Hall.

An official version of the 2000-01 Undergraduate
Catalog is online this fall through the efforts of Academic Computing,
Publications and the Provost's Office.
Lineup for 2000-01 Distinguished
Faculty Lecture Series announced
The 2000-01 Distinguished Faculty Lecture Series
opens Tuesday, Oct. 17 with a presentation by Education professor
Sonia Nieto. Other lecturers selected for the series are Economics
professor James Boyce (Dec. 5), professor John Mullin of Landscape
Architecture and Regional Planning (March 6) and Physics professor
Jose Mestre (April 10).
Plans for shared
digital library moving forward
Staff members of the five University libraries
met recently in Shrewsbury to advance a plan for a shared digital
library. More than 60 representatives of the President's Office,
University Information Systems, the I-495 Center for Professional
Education, and all five campus libraries gathered at the Hoagland-Pincus
Conference Center of UMass Worcester to share ideas and set priorities
for the delivery of information and services to the Commonwealth.
