Fey Elected to Chair of Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees elected Grace Fey as its new chair at an Aug. 2
meeting on the Worcester campus. Fey, who had been serving as vice chair
of the board, was unanimously voted into the post.
Police
Raises Approved by Legislature; Funds for Education Incentives Blocked
Funding for a now-expired UMass Police contract cleared the Legislature
last week, but without the educational incentives the officers have been
seeking.
Supplemental
Bill Funds $5M
for Baystate Alliance
A supplemental budget approved last week by the Legislature includes $5
million for a life sciences partnership with Baystate Medical Center and
nearly $1.8 to fund the most recent contract with the Graduate Employee
Organization.
Bulger
Appoints Vice President and Chief Information Officer
An information technology official from the Pennsylvania higher education
system has been appointed to the newly created post of vice president
and chief information officer by President William M. Bulger.
Health
Insurance, Scholarship
Vetoes Overridden
Attempts by Gov. Paul Cellucci to reduce funding for scholarships and
state employees' health insurance were turned back last week as legislators
overrode 45 of the 262 items the governor rejected from the Legislature's
$21.55 billion budget plan.
Gill
Appointed Chancellor
of Higher Education
Following a national search, the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education
last week appointed Judith Gill chancellor of the board. Gill had been
acting chancellor since Stanley Koplik, who had held the post for nearly
seven years, died unexpectedly in January.
Isenberg
School Addition Named
for Harold Alfond
The Board of Trustees last week approved the naming of the upcoming addition
to the Isenberg School of Management for a major donor to the school.
The 49,800-square-foot addition will be called Harold Alfond Hall in honor
of Harold and Dorothy "Bibby" Alfond's $1 million donation to the project.
