Linda Nolan, interim dean of Commonwealth College and professor in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences, has been named a 2000-01 American Council on Education (ACE) Fellow. She is one of 34 fellows selected this year.

Nolan was nominated for the fellowship by Chancellor David K. Scott, a strong supporter of the ACE Fellows program for more than a decade. "The ACE Fellows program has an outstanding record of identifying academic leaders of the future," Scott said. "A large number of fellows have become presidents, provosts, deans, and other academic administrators. Given the high selectivity of the program, we are proud that three fellows have come from UMass over the last few years.

"Linda Nolan has already provided outstanding leadership on this campus, and I know that she and the University, as well as academe in general, will benefit from the experience."

Elizabeth Dale, formerly director of Business and Facilities Services at the Lincoln Campus Center/Student Union complex, is currently completing an ACE Fellowship at the University of Delaware. During 1996-97, Javier Cevallos, interim vice chancellor for Student Affairs, served as an ACE Fellow at Wesleyan University. The campus has also hosted three ACE Fellows since 1993.

The ACE Fellows program, established in 1965, is designed to offer in-depth, comprehensive leadership training for faculty and senior administrators in higher education. The program has provided professional development experience for more than 1,200 individuals, many of whom have moved on to become chief executives or to fill other high-level administrative positions. Fellows, who are nominated by the president or chancellor of their institutions and selected in a national competition, focus on an issue of concern to their campus while spending the academic year being mentored by a president or senior official at a host institution. They attend three week-long seminars, and are encouraged to engage in various other activities to broaden their perspectives on leadership and management issues.

Nolan will complete her fellowship at Arizona State University, working with president Lattie Coor and Milton Glick, senior vice president and provost.

Nolan says she is "extremely grateful and excited to be serving the University" as an ACE Fellow. She notes the experience will enable her to meet with national leaders in the field of higher education, learn from the experiences of other institutions, and connect to a national network of institutions facing similar issues as UMass.

"I will be traveling a great deal, both nationally and internationally, and I look forward to representing and highlighting the accomplishments of UMass," she says.

Nolan was named interim dean of Commonwealth College in 1999 after previously serving as director of the Honors Program since 1993. One of five candidates under consideration for permanent appointment as dean of the honors college, Nolan has not withdrawn her candidacy. The search for the post is ongoing, according to the Provost's Office.
