Amherst Town Meeting representatives last
week adopted a resolution backing University efforts to discourage
first-year students from bringing cars to campus.
The April 27 vote also calls for the University to ban first-year
students from bringing cars beginning in the 2001-02 academic
year.
Supporters of the ban say it will help address concerns about
environmental problems and traffic congestion.
Campus officials, while stopping short of implementing the ban,
have promised to limit first-year students to parking in peripheral
lots and to do more to promote use of the bus system.
