Three University students have been charged
with raping a 15-year-old Amherst girl in a campus residence hall
and at an off-campus apartment in February.
Roberto A. Andrade, 25, of Brockton, and Joaquim A. Alves, 21,
and Renato A. Brandao, 23, both of Dorchester, pleaded innocent
at their arraignment in Hampshire Superior Court on March 30.
In addition, University officials have suspended all three students
pending campus disciplinary proceedings.
Andrade is charged with three counts of rape and abuse of a child
under 16. Brandao faces two counts of rape and abuse of a child
under 16 and one count each of indecent assault and battery and
assault with intent to rape. Alves is charged with rape and abuse
of a child under 16.
The three are accused of raping the girl in Kennedy Tower, where
Alves lives. Andrade is also charged with raping the girl at Colonial
Apartments, where he lives. Prosecutors say the assaults took
place on the night of Feb. 25 and the morning of Feb. 26. The
girl reported the attacks the next day.
Assistant District Attorney Susan Loehn would not say if the
girl agreed to sex or whether alcohol was involved. By state law,
a 15-year-old cannot consent to sex.
The three men were released on personal recognizance and ordered
to stay away from the girl.
A pre-trial conference for the defendants is scheduled for June
13.
