The campus's Millennium Committee is inviting the University community to submit suggestions for the Year 2000 UMass Time Capsule, to be installed in the crypt of the Old Chapel during a campus celebration on May 1.

Chancellor David K. Scott recently named the committee, which includes representatives of the campus community, to consider what articles would be appropriate to put into a time capsule to be opened 100 years from now.

Psychology professor Susan Whitbourne, who co-chairs the committee along with History professor Ron Story, says students, faculty, staff and alumni are encouraged to suggest small items that are commemorative of the campus in the year 2000 or that recall its history. Photos, articles, letters and other small memorabilia are preferred, and individuals who suggest the items should be prepared to provide them.

"The materials should be of potential historical interest," says Whitbourne, "and ideally will provide a lively cross-section of the physical, social and cultural aspects of our campus.

"We're especially interested in showcasing the achievements of the members of the campus community," she says.

Suggestions for items should be submitted in writing by April 18 to Becky Dean, Chancellor's Office, Whitmore Administration Building or by e-mail (millennium_capsule@ admin.umass.edu).

In addition, the Millennium Committee has established a Web site (www.umass.edu/capsule/), where suggestions may also be submitted.
