New CHM Education and Diversity Specialist
The MassNanoTech Institute is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael
Westort as Education and Diversity Specialist in its NSF Center for
Hierarchical Manufacturing and coordinator of its IGERT Program in
Nanotechnology Innovation. Mike has a ten-year professional career of working
with college-level populations in Western Massachusetts, and brings a strong
background in teaching, mentoring, program development, program evaluation,
academic support, and outreach to multicultural students. Mike holds a
doctorate in Teacher Education and Curriculum Studies (Ed.D) and a Masters in

Research Challenges for Nanomanufacturing Systems
The CHM is sponsoring a workshop on “Research Challenges for Nanomanufacturing Systems,” February 11-12, 2008 at the National Science Foundation.
Summer Undergraduate Research Program
Applications are being accepted until February 29, 2008 for participants in the 2008 Summer Undergraduate Research Experiences (SURE) Program in Nanotechnology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, co-sponsored by the Center for Hierarchical Manufacturing.
National Nanomanufacturing Network Launched
Linking together research centers, government labs and agencies, and industrial research programs, the CHM announced in September 2007 the formation of a National Nanomanufacturing Network.
Nanoinformatics Workshop Held
The CHM sponsored a workshop on Nanoinformatics Strategies in Arlington, VA on June 11-12, 2007, focusing on challenges and opportunities for the handling of much new information and data arising from nanotechnology research.
Students Learn About Nanoscience
78 middle-school students from the New England region attended a CHM-hosted educational workshop, “Explorations in Nanoscale Science and Engineering,” on November 4, 2007.
CHM Researchers Lead ACS Polymer Chemistry Workshop
Kenneth Carter and James Watkins of the Center for Hierarchical Manufacturing led a workshop on “Opportunities for Nanostructured Polymeric Materials for Device Fabrication,” November 4-8, 2007 in Lake Tahoe, NV.
