Scholarships Available through the Chemistry Department

 

Freshman

Uche Anyanwu Memorial Award for Outstanding Research – Awarded to the top three posters by chemistry majors at the Undergraduate Research Poster Session. This award is $100. By Award Selection Committee only (no application or nomination required).

Bates Summer Research Fellowship and Rowell Scholarship – Awarded to a chemistry major of high academic achievement for summer research support in the department. Made possible by the generous gift of Roger Bates. Approximately $2,500 award. If interested, a Faculty member recommendation and Student application are required.

Bradspies Research Fellowship – The award includes $3,000 for summer research for a chemistry major of high academic achievement for research support in the department. Made possible by the gift of Juanita Bradspies, chemistry major, class of 1959. If interested, a Faculty member recommendation and Student application are required.

CRC Freshman Chemistry Awards – This award includes a copy of the Handbook of Chemistry and Physics with a commemorative scroll attached to the inside front cover. Awarded to students who have recently completed general chemistry.

Jack Ragle Summer Research Fellowship – Awarded to a chemistry major of high academic achievement for summer research in physical chemistry. Made possible by the generous gift of a chemistry alum. Approximately $4000 award. If interested, a Faculty member recommendation and Student application are required.

Edward Shapiro Scholarship Fund – Scholarships based on need and scholarship to a son or daughter of a New England Nuclear employee, son or daughter of a Massachusetts subsidiary of Dupont, or, if no candidates from these two categories, a chemistry major at any of the UMass campuses. Awarded to students who are matriculated at UMass, chemistry majors, and in the freshman to junior classes. Awards are 2-5 awards of $500 each. By Award Selection Committee only (no application or nomination required).

Mr. Tompkins Award – Awarded to two chemistry majors that includes a $150 prize who have shown devotion to the discipline by success in the research lab. If interested, a Faculty member recommendation and Student application are required.

Sophomores

Robert Maxwell Williams Memorial Scholarship Fund – This award includes $200 and an embossed certificate. Awards to be made to recognize accomplishments of undergraduates in the non-majors organic chemistry courses. If interested, a Faculty member nomination and Student application are required.

Juniors

Inorganic Chemistry Award from the Inorganic Division of the American Chemical Society – Award certificate from the Division and a letter of commendation from the Division Chair.   Name and affiliation with UMass will be posted on a list available on the ACS Division of Inorganic Chemistry website. If interested, a Faculty member nomination and Student application are required.

Oliver Zajicek Memorial Scholarship Award – Awarded to a chemistry major who has demonstrated excellence in research in analytical chemistry. Awardee selected by the Analytical Division Faculty. If interested, a Faculty member nomination and Student application are required. Approximately $400 award. 

Seniors

American Institute of Chemists (AIC) Award – The award includes a one-year associate membership in the AIC, and an honored guest status at a special awards banquet. Interested students should apply in the last semester of their senior year. If interested, a Faculty member nomination is required.

Connecticut Valley Section of the ACS (CVS/ACS) Student Award – This award includes a one-year membership to the American Chemical Society, a subscription to the ACS Journal of the student's choice and $75. It is presented annually to a graduating senior at the CVS Undergraduate Student Research Symposium.If interested, a Faculty member recommendation and Student application are required.

Departmental Recognition Award – Awarded to two chemistry majors of high academic achievement, service to the department, and/or outstanding research. If interested, a Faculty member nomination is required in the spring of your senior year. 

Richard W. Fessenden Memorial Scholarship – This award involves a cash gift of $100 and inscription of the recipient's name on the Fessenden Plaque. Awarded to a senior who best exemplifies the twin attributes of high scholarship and citizenship within the chemistry department. If interested, a Faculty member nomination is required.

Hypercube Scholar Award – This award includes a plaque and the latest professional version of HyperChem software. Awarded to a graduating senior who plans to attend graduate school, must be working with theory in their undergraduate research, and whose career plans might include molecular modeling. If interested, a Faculty member nomination is required.

Inorganic Chemistry Award from the Inorganic Division of the American Chemical Society – Award certificate from the Division and a letter of commendation from the Division Chair.   Name and affiliation with UMass will be posted on a list available on the ACS Division of Inorganic Chemistry website. Organic Chemistry Award from the Organic Division of the American Chemical Society – Award certificate from the Division and a letter of commendation from the Division Chair. Name and affiliation with UMass will be posted on a list available on the ACS Division of Organic Chemistry website. If interested, a Faculty member nomination is required.
