Sam the Minuteman is the biggest supporter of UMass athletics. He attends all the home football, hockey, menís basketball and womenís basketball games. In addition, Sam has also attended several soccer, field hockey, lacrosse, baseball and softball games. He holds the record for most athletic events attended in one year.
Aside from the sporting events Sam has been involved in many other activities as well. Sam recently competed in the 2005 Capital One All America Mascot Challenege. Sam made it all the way to the finals! During his adventures throughout North America, Sam invaded Vancouver, Wheel of Fortune in Los Angeles, and NBC's Today Show in New York City.
In 2004, Sam was invited to ESPNís 25th anniversary celebration in New York City where he walked the red carpet with the best athletes in the world of sports. Sam also recently appeared in a commercial co-starring tennis great Andy Roddick in ESPNís This is Sportscenter campaign. In addition to his work with ESPN, Sam has made several appearances at the Basketball Hall of Fame, the Big E, Relay for Life and at local schools and community events.
Sam is highly competitive by nature. He performs each year with the cheerleading squads at the National Championships in Daytona Beach. He also competes in Mascot Nationals as well. Sam came in 5th in the Nation during the 2005 Mascot Nationals; it was the first time he ever qualified for finals.
