2010 U.S. Census

March 24, 2010

To the UMass Amherst Community

Our Constitution requires that every resident of the United States be counted every ten years.

I am writing today to encourage the entire campus community to complete Census 2010: faculty, staff, undergraduates, graduate students, U.S. students, and international students, as well as graduating seniors and others who plan to leave the area at the end of the semester.

The results of the census determine how federal funds are allocated to Massachusetts and to our local communities. These results affect college tuition grants and loan money. They inform faculty research and influence the number of congressional representatives assigned to our state. Many of our local critical services are connected to the results of Census 2010, including transportation, public safety, medical care, and road repairs.

People are counted where they live and sleep most of the year. Faculty and staff have probably already received Census 2010 at home. Students living on campus will receive their census through the residence hall system. Students living off campus, will receive it in the mail.

Below this letter, you will find a link to the UMass Amherst Census 2010 campus website. It provides more specifics about completing the census and discusses possible concerns, such as confidentiality. You will also find a schedule of student-run resource tables.

Historically, college students have had low participation in the census. I ask that this decade, the entire UMass Amherst community work together and reverse that trend. Let’s show that we as a campus actively chose to make a difference in our future.
