Chancellor Announces New Advisory Staff Council
-
August 3, 2009
To Campus Staff,
During my first year as chancellor, I have relied on the advice and suggestions of many segments of the campus community. While there are formal channels in place for communication with faculty and students, I believe it’s also important for senior leadership to hear from professional and classified employees about policies and decisions that affect staff and their work life at UMass Amherst.
Therefore, I have established the Advisory Staff Council (ASC) to serve as a consultative body to the senior executive leadership of the campus. The council is not intended to replace or substitute for collective bargaining units that represent campus employees. In fact, the council includes members from every campus union as well as non- unit staff, and each of the nine executive areas is represented.
While the representatives of the International Brotherhood of Police Officers units have not yet been named, the other members of the ASC are:
- Francis Martin, AFSCME
- Randall Boivin, AFSCME
- Kathy Rhines, PSU Units A & B
- Jo Anne Martone, PSU Units A & B
- Donna Johnson, USA
- Jane Litwin-Taylor, USA
- Susan Bronstein, Academic Affairs
- Jenn Farner, University Development
- Lisa Liebowitz, Research
- Anne Mathisen, Information Technology
- Gail Matthews, Student Affairs
- Mary Jane Quinn, Chancellor’s Office
- Sally Shaffer, University Relations
- Jaime Seguin, Athletics
- Larry Snyder, Administration and Finance
I expect the ASC will meet at least twice during the academic year, but I may call other meetings as needed. The council had its initial meeting on June 8 and is expected to convene again later this month. Juan Jarrett, assistant vice chancellor for human resources, is the liaison between the ASC and campus management.
We have also established a dedicated e-mail account for the ASC so that staff members can communicate concerns or issues directly to the council. Please send those communications to asc@admin.umass.edu.
Thank you for your efforts on behalf of UMass Amherst and enjoy the rest of the summer.
Robert C. Holub
Chancellor
