Dr. Mei-Yau Shih, Associate Director

ShihDr. Mei-Yau Shih is Associate Director at the Center for Teaching, University of Massachusetts Amherst. She is responsible for identifying, developing, and overseeing campus-wide teaching technology services through the Center for Teaching. Dr. Shih received her Ph.D. of Educational Technology in 1991, and M.A. of Journalism and Mass Communications in 1987 from the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley, Colorado.

She joined the CFT in August, 1998; before that she was employed at Westmar University in LeMars, Iowa as Associate Academic Dean, Associate Professor, and Director of the Telecommunications Programs. She helped develop the telecommunications minor program on the Westmar campus and directed a global educational network that connects college students from Germany, India, China, Chili and the USA on the Internet. She has taught both undergraduate and graduate courses in the areas of foundation of telecommunications, international telecommunication, educational technology, educational web design and information management system.

Currently, in addition to CFT’s duty, Dr. Shih is also an Adjunct Associate Professor of Educational Technology in the Department of Teacher Education and Curriculum Studies of the University of Massachusetts. She teaches a graduate course every year in the School of Education and serves on doctoral dissertation committees and oversees various independent studies.

Dr. Shih has consulted with hundreds of faculty members on integrating instructional technologies in classroom and has conducted a variety of assessments on instructional technology use for both online and regular classroom teaching. She has presented at various regional, national and international conferences and given workshops in the areas of effective use of instructional technology, strategies of faculty development in technology, and techniques of technology assessment. She has worked as co-PIs on various external and internal research grants including the Online Teaching and Learning and Assessment grant from the UMass President’s Office, Microsoft Conference XP development grant from the Microsoft, Use tablet PC in undergraduate class grant from the Microsoft and Teaching large Class with Technology grant from the Davis Foundation.
