The BCRC is a Macintosh Computing Facility in the
Department of Biology located in
Morrill Science Center (map), at the
University
of Massachusetts. If you have questions, please send

academic year, the BCRC is staffed by student consultants
Monday through Friday from 9am - 6pm. Summer and
intersession hours are unofficial, but the facility is
usually open anyway. The
Director collaborates with faculty and students to

The Center works in collaboration with
University instructors to develop computer-based
instructional applications that support their teaching.
CCBIT developed the OWL online homework system (Online
Web-Based Learning). CCBIT staff members have expertise in
instructional design for computer-based education,
multimedia and web design and programming, and software
engineering. Projects range from assisting new OWL
instructors to the development of educational multimedia
applications to the creation of educational websites large
and small. Staff also provides consultation in the
analysis of instructional technology needs and the
development of new project ideas.
Many of CCBIT’s more ambitious projects
are funded through grants developed jointly by CCBIT staff
and the client instructors. Faculty and staff are
encouraged to contact CCBIT with questions and/or new
project ideas.

The Center for Teaching supports faculty
and TAs in their efforts to enhance teaching and learning
with technology. Resources include:

The TEACHnology® Fellows Program, an
annual teaching development program for tenured faculty,
funded by the academic deans and the Provost’s Office.
Fellows are awarded a state-of-the-art laptop computer
and opportunities for development through individual
consultation, attend an ongoing seminar, and network
with other fellows and service providers.

A Multimedia Resources lab to provide
opportunities for curriculum design and practice in
implementing teaching technologies in the classroom.
-
Campus-wide workshops and roundtables on
using presentation tools, computer-based instruction,
classroom communication systems, and distance learning
tools in ways that enhance teaching and student
learning.

Individual consultation on issues of
good practice in teaching and learning as related to
instructional technology.

Chemistry majors and graduate students have access by

Facilities: Over 20 PC classroom setup, 12
Mac classroom setup, Printing ($.08/pg, $.10/pg for color,
UCard only). Ethernet network available. See CRC web page
for other resource information. Computer accounts
available for students currently enrolled in a chemistry
course. Chemistry graduates provide drop-in tutoring
assistance during the regular semester M-Th from noon
until 10pm, and Friday from noon to 5 pm.

The Center coordinates the study of the least
commonly taught languages for the Five College consortium.
The consortium, known as
Five
Colleges, Incorporated, includes Amherst College,
Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College, Smith College
and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. The Center
also develops materials and curricula for language
learning with an emphasis on the least commonly taught
languages and on more commonly taught languages as spoken
in Africa, Asia, and the Americas.

research. Academic Computing teaches workshops for
faculty on learning and teaching technologies (such as
WebCT, an on-line teaching environment). For a list of

Academic Computing provides access to technologies,
with instructional media, video-conferencing and digital
editing facilities. Their Instructional Media Lab offers
one-on-one consulting on a variety of topics, including
WebCT, Dreamweaver, best practices for PowerPoint, and
PDF. They also have flatbed and slide scanners available
for faculty. Consulting hours are available most days.

In 1974
the College of Engineering at the University of
Massachusetts Amherst,
in
conjunction with industry partners, developed a
distance-learning program. Today this entity is known as
the Professional Education for Engineering and Applied
Science program. As a distance education provider, the
program addresses education and advanced degree needs. As
courses are taught by
resident
graduate faculty to the on-campus students, they are also
videotaped for purposes of delivery via CD-ROM, DVD, and
VHS videotape.
Through the program, the same University instruction and
academic credits
available
on campus are accessible to students, regardless of their
geographic location. Currently, the program offers over 60
credit courses each semester in addition to a summer
session of over 30. Three graduate degrees can be
completed through the program, leading to a Master of
Science degree in Computer Science, Electrical and
Computer Engineering, and Engineering Management.
Facilities include:

Four broadcast studios ranging in size from 40 to 85
seat multimedia facilities.

Satellite broadcasting capability on KU band.
-
Interactive compressed video through PictureTel
system.

Microwave-based video and audio services to
Springfield and Boston.

Video and audio links to the Mullins Center
distributable via satellite, microwave, ISDN, or any
other available means.
Caveats: This program is self-supporting and thus does
charge for its
services.
