TLDC Request for Proposals

he Teaching and Learning in the Diverse Classroom Fellowship program (TLDC) is an in-depth teaching development opportunity offered each academic year by the Center for Teaching (CFT). TLDC offers a department / college-based collegial forum for faculty and teaching assistants to explore teaching and learning issues important for our increasingly diverse student population. TLDC fellows are not expected to be experts on diversity issues. They are individuals who have a genuine love of teaching and learning and possess a desire to be excellent educators for all their students. They are willing to participate in the creative process of fusing the best practices in teaching and learning with an understanding of how to create and sustain classrooms that nurture the success of all students.

The TLDC program includes a day-long fall retreat, a bi-weekly seminar, individual teaching assessment opportunities, and consultation on issues related to a discipline-based teaching project. The TLDC program provides participants with the opportunity to share information on teaching and learning and to collaboratively acquire concrete pedagogical skills for creating effective, inclusive learning environments for all students. In the past, participants in the TLDC program have been selected from across the disciplines and, more recently, fellows have been from the same department or college (School of Public Health and Health Sciences, 1999-2000; Clinical Psychology, 2000-2001; English, 2001-2002; and Student Development and Pupil Personnel Services, 2002-2003; Nutrition, 2003-2004; Sport Management 2004-2005; Journalism, 2005-2006, and Women's Studies, 2006-2007).

TLDC Fellows will be expected to:

  • Participate in a day-long retreat as scheduled.

  • Participate in a regularly scheduled discussion seminar during the 2006-2007 academic year (approximately once every two weeks).

  • Initiate a teaching development project focused on teaching and diversity-related issues in either a new or revised course.

  • Assess the impact of course development initiatives on the learning experience of your students within the context of departmental diversity goals.

Up to ten people can be selected as Fellows of the TLDC program. Fellows either receive $1,500.00 for individual course development initiatives or an equivalent bloc grant to the department / college for a total department award of up to $15,000.00.

Prior participants in the TLDC program have been highly positive about the program. They indicate that the project helped them become better teachers by offering a structured opportunity to discuss and explore teaching style and methods; to develop new collegial relationships; and to increase their awareness of, and ability to positively address, the diversity in classrooms. For further information, please contact Matt Ouellett at the CFT by calling 545-1225 or by email at cfteach@acad.umass.edu. The TLDC Fellowship Program will be on hiatus for the 2007-2008 academic year.
