TEACHnology Fellowship Program
he
CFT's mission to provide opportunities for professional
development in teaching to faculty and TAs has expanded to
address the new issues of instructional technology and its
implications for teaching and learning. The Center for
Teaching launched the TEACHnology Fellowship Program in 1997
to provide intense support to a core group of tenured faculty,
permitting the "seeding" of educational technology throughout
departments and colleges.
The TEACHnology Initiative
calls for a partnership between the Offices of the Provost and
the Academic Deans in our nine schools and colleges. It is
administered by the Center for Teaching which actively
networks with other instructional technology service units on
campus.
Note: As we mark the tenth anniversary of the TEACHnology program, we consulted with the Deans and Associate Deans and have decided to take a hiatus this coming year from the TEACHnology program to evaluate its design, goals, and methods. This will help us to determine whether this program as currently configured constitutes to meet the needs of faculty members. After this in depth review, we may launch a different teaching technology program next year and once we have it configured we will announce it to the campus.

Fellowship Program
Goals
The major goals of the
TEACHnology fellowship are to help senior faculty apply the
capacities of technology to teaching and learning,
particularly at the undergraduate level; to foster teaching
innovations through technology; to increase communication and
collaboration among users of technology; and to provide a
special opportunity for renewal to senior faculty.
-
To support individual
faculty efforts to use instructional technology.
-
To increase communication
among users of technology and other interested parties .
-
To coordinate efforts with
other units on campus who provide technical expertise and
support for instructional technology.
-
To recognize and reward
excellence in the use of instructional technology.

Program Components
Unlike other faculty
technological preparation programs, this fellowship
opportunity allows faculty to remain in a cohort for the
entire year as a supportive community. Throughout the year
they attend the hands-on training workshops of various
teaching technologies, bi-weekly seminars featuring the
pedagogy/technology framework for implementation, and an
opportunity to assess the effect of their technological
endeavor on student learning. The critical components in this
program are:
-
Department/College-based
Commitment
-
Retreat/Orientation (early
fall)
-
Bi-weekly Seminars
-
Individual Projects and
Consultations
-
Technology Assessment
-
TEACHnology Fellows Network
-
Campus-wide Workshops (late
spring)

TEACHnology
Fellows Selection
Every spring, each department
chair nominates faculty to participate in the TEACHnology
Program. Each year, ten selected fellows receives a brand new
laptop and selected software installed for their project
development. The deans of each college and school support the
costs of these laptops and software. In return, each fellow is
required to develop a technology related project that will be
implemented in one of their courses, and present the project
to the campus at an annual luncheon. They are also encouraged
to disseminate their fellowship experiences in their
department, to their colleagues, and eventually serve as
instructional technology mentors to other faculty in their
colleges and schools.
