Past Funded Fellowship Programs
Hewlett
Teaching Fellows (January 2000 ~ December 2001)
The campus received a $150,000 grant from the William
and Flora Hewlett Foundation under the General Education in
Research Universities Program. Funds from the Hewlett grant
were used to establish a student-centered faculty development
program. The program goal was to transform the General
Education program in order to engage students more actively in
their learning. The program was centered around intensive,
year-long Hewlett Teaching Fellowships for faculty that focus
on the needs of lower division students. Fellows worked
together to redesign a General Education course they currently
teach. They explored strategies for engaging students in
active learning, develop a systematic assessment of learning
around inquiry, and participate in dissemination on campus and
at a national level. The Hewlett Fellowship was coordinated by
a distinguished teacher-scholar, Dr. Susan Cocalis, Professor
of Germanic Languages and Literature.
Online
Instruction Fellows Program, (2001-2002)
The Center for Teaching received a Professional
Development Grant Award for Instructional Technology for
Academic Development from the University of Massachusetts
President’s Office. This is a yearlong faculty fellows
program for early adopters in on-line instruction. Throughout
the year of 2001 and 2002, participants from five UMass
campuses identified and addressed the challenges and benefits
of online instruction. The discussion was focused on the
development of cross-disciplinary pedagogical and assessment
tools and techniques that can serve as models for UMassOnline
courses. An “Online Teaching and Learning Handbook”
was developed for distribution to all faculty members at five
UMass campuses.
