Conceptual
- Program development brainstorming and guidance
- Research potential organizational funders
Private Potential Funders
- Determine best potential funders
- Qualify project/application through phone and email contact with potential private organizational funders
- Coordinate and prioritize campuswide applications, if necessary
Develop the Proposal
- Create proposal submission timeline
- Draft revision recommendations and edits (1-2 weeks for intensive, 2-3 days for perfunctory, simple improvements) with particular attention to aligning with foundation’s specific criteria
- Assist with budget construction, review and make recommendations
- Determine with funder acceptability of simpler 501(c)(1) vs. 501(c)(3)
- Ensure UMass institutional requirements are met: Internal Processing Form (IPF); 501(c)(1) or 501(c)(3), only the Office of Corporate and Foundation Relations can obtain UMass Foundation 501(c)(1) letter; UMass Foundation Board, fiscal agent 501(c)(3) determination letter; financial statements
Submission
- Submit to OGCA for institutional approvals and tracking
- Assist with any necessary revisions/clarification OGCA requires
- Pick up approved proposal from OGCA
- Proposal production including aesthetic presentation and final assembly
- Submission (mail or upload) to meet deadline
Post-submission
- Arrange, facilitate and coordinate foundation site visits to UMass
- Follow up with OGCA and/or funder regarding status
- Enter into Advance for University Advancement tracking
- Notification as appropriate
- Obtain funder feedback if denied and determine if resubmission with modifications worthwhile
Miscellaneous
- Grant writing training
- Arrange, coordinate, attend and facilitate pre- and/or post-visits to foundations
- Letter of Inquiry guidance, rewrite and editing assistance
