Biofuel Management Evaluation in Massachusetts

Switchgrass and other biofuels productivity are being evaluated for potential alternative energy sources in Massachusetts. The project includes cellulosic and oilseed biofuel crops.

Switchgrass:

-          Evaluation of seed sources to determine suitable switchgrass varieties.

-          Seed vigor test for successful establishment of switchgrass.

-          Nitrogen management for optimum forage yield, winter survival and spring regrowth vigor.

-          Economic evaluation for production of switchgrass in comparison to several other crops such as corn, alfalfa and grass hay.

-          End product use as pellets for farm and domestic heat.

Oilseed Crops:

-          Oilseed rape, Crambe, soybean, and sunflower will be evaluated in 2009.

Funded in part by UMass Experiment Station, MTC, MDOER, and MDAR.
