Credentials Service – Faculty
The UMass Amherst Credentials Service allows students to maintain a file of evaluations from faculty members and others. These evaluations are used to support applications to graduate or professional school, other academic programs, scholarships, or in seeking employment.
The Credentials Service simplifies the process for faculty evaluations and recommendations. You’ll only need to write one evaluation for each requesting student or graduate. Once you submit the evaluation to our office, we will send it as part of a student’s file to graduate programs or potential employers at the student’s request.
To submit an evaluation to a student’s credential file, download our Evaluation Form. You may also request a form from our office, or submit an evaluation on your letterhead.
On the form, students are able to indicate whether the evaluation will be confidential or not. If it is confidential, the student will not be able to read it. You should discuss the confidentiality of the evaluation with the student before completing it. Please note that most graduate schools require confidential letters.
Once you have submitted an evaluation it becomes the property of Career Services. In the future, you may replace the evaluation, but not amend it. If you wish to substitute a new evaluation for the old one, you must show proof that you have properly notified the candidate.
